A new mod for Baldur’s Gate 3 is taking combat in the D&D RPG in an exciting new direction – real-time action. While Larian Studios’ acclaimed RPG has traditionally used turn-based combat inspired by tabletop rules, one modder is experimenting with removing the turns for a more fluid fighting experience.
Baldur’s Gate 3 real-time combat mod
YouTuber and modder ‘tinybike’ has released an early version of a combat mode conversion that switches Baldur’s Gate 3’s battles from turn-based to fully real-time.
A video they shared on YouTube gives a glimpse of the change, showing exploration and fighting playing out without pause in the Dank Crypt encounter. The character is seen constantly moving, attacking enemies, and healing on the fly to stay alive against threats.
While still very much a work in progress, the mod opens up intriguing possibilities for Baldur’s Gate 3. The author acknowledges there is more balancing needed, like adjusting attack speeds. They also plan to add a pause button to allow strategic control during intense fights.
Combined with other experimental mods like a roguelike mode or increased follower counts, a polished real-time combat mod could transform Baldur’s Gate 3 into a different style of hardcore action-RPG. It remains to be seen how fully fledged the concept can become, but modders are already pushing the creative boundaries of the early access game in compelling new directions. Fans will be keeping an eye on tinybike’s progress as this promising mod continues development.
