India recently made a surprise decision to require laptops, tablets and minicomputers to be licensed to enter the country. After this decision, which left many technology companies in a difficult situation, giant brands are preparing to protest this situation.
Apple calls on US officials to take action against India
As is well known, India has recently introduced a new license requirement covering a wide range of electrical devices from laptops to tablets in order to increase local production. Effective November 1st, the new decision is not welcomed by foreign companies.
Many companies claim that this decision taken by the Indian government will harm the country’s goal of becoming a global manufacturing center and consumers. The companies that decided to work together on this issue came together and formed a board.
Apple has also joined the coalition of US businesses formed to protest India’s decision. The coalition of 8 companies sent a letter to US officials asking them to urge India to reconsider its policy, which will introduce a new licensing requirement for technology imports starting November 1.
The letter, signed by Apple, Intel and other technology companies, states that this new policy could harm both them and India. The companies emphasize that increased production in India can only be possible in an environment of mutual trust.
Several US industry groups, including the Information Technology Industry Council, the National Association of Manufacturers and the Semiconductor Industry Association, have also objected to the new licensing scheme, saying that it could affect shipments of computers and electronic devices to India and impede free flow.
It looks like the tug of war between India and tech companies will continue for some time to come. What do you think about India’s new import rules? Please share your views in the comments section.
