The results of the Address-Based Population Registration System (ADNKS) for 2024, published by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), reveal that Turkey’s population increased by 292,567 people compared to the previous year, reaching 85 million 664 thousand 944 people in 2025. This increase also brought about some significant changes in the age structure of the population. Here are the statistics and other figures published:
Nearly Equal Distribution of Men and Women in the Population
In terms of gender distribution, the male population was 42 million 853 thousand 110, while the female population was 42 million 811 thousand 834. As a result, 50.02% of the total population is male, and 49.98% is female.

The annual population growth rate saw a notable increase, rising from 1.1 per thousand in 2023 to 3.4 per thousand in 2024. The main reasons for this increase include a slight rise in birth rates and continued urbanization. In 2023, 93% of the population lived in city and town centers, which rose to 93.4% in 2024. At the same time, the percentage of people living in towns and villages decreased from 7% to 6.6%.
The median age of Turkey’s population showed a significant change in 2025. The median age rose from 34 in 2023 to 34.4 in 2024. When examined by gender, the median age for men increased from 33.2 to 33.7, and for women, it rose from 34.7 to 35.2.
The most populous province in Turkey remained Istanbul. As of 2024, Istanbul’s population increased by 45,678 people compared to the previous year, reaching 15 million 701 thousand 602 people. Istanbul was followed by Ankara with 5 million 864 thousand 49 people, Izmir with 4 million 493 thousand 242 people, Bursa with 3 million 238 thousand 618 people, and Antalya with 2 million 722 thousand 103 people.
According to TUIK’s data, Bayburt had the least population in Turkey, with 83,676 people. It was followed by Tunceli with 86,612, Ardahan with 91,354, Gümüşhane with 142,617, and Kilis with 156,739 people.
