Last June, the Titan submarine belonging to the OceanGate company, which organized a touristic trip to the Titanic shipwreck, collapsed inward and buried billionaire tourists. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) shared with the public the audio recording of the implosion (inward collapse) of the Titan submarine, whose tickets cost 250 thousand dollars per person. The audio recording has attracted a great deal of attention as the first audio evidence documenting the final moments of the tragic event that occurred on June 18, 2023. Details are in our news…
Audio recording of the Titan submarine’s launch has been released! Recorded from 1,448 kilometers away
The sound recording was detected by one of NOAA’s passive acoustic recorders strategically placed in the ocean, 1,448 kilometers from the crash site. Experts have confirmed that there is a distinct deep reverberation in the recording among the background noise and that this is the acoustic signature of Titan’s impact.
The shared recording is considered by experts as an important piece of evidence to understand how the accident happened. In addition, by analyzing the recording in detail, researchers plan to obtain new information to improve safety protocols for deep-sea diving.
Meanwhile, the Titan disaster brought a global debate questioning the safety standards of tourist deep-sea diving. Following the incident, many countries and research centers have initiated efforts to make submarine safety standards stricter.
In this context, MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) developed a new sonar system called “Autonomous Sparse-Aperture Multibeam Echo Sounder”. This system detects objects lost at great depths much faster, making it easier to investigate similar accidents in the future.
