Microsoft and OpenAI have taken the first step towards building a supercomputer named Stargate and a massive data center. Although there hasn’t been an official announcement yet, it’s claimed that Microsoft has allocated a huge budget for the project. Here are the details of the world’s largest data center and the colossal budget allocated for artificial intelligence.
The Stargate supercomputer and giant data center for artificial intelligence
According to a recent report, Microsoft and OpenAI are striving to stay ahead in the race with a massive data center and the Stargate supercomputer. As you know, recent developments such as Gemini, Amazon’s investments in artificial intelligence, and Elon Musk’s free Grok initiative have been challenging even ChatGPT.
However, ChatGPT-4 remains by far the most widely used artificial intelligence language. Microsoft is now turning this massive income generated by artificial intelligence into a major investment. Accordingly, OpenAI and Microsoft will establish a data center worth $100 billion.
The $100 billion data center, built around a supercomputer called Stargate, will be ready by 2028. The most significant difference in this data center is that it will be AI-powered. Especially the Stargate supercomputer at the heart of the data center will also be AI-powered. Before this data center, Microsoft is developing a supercomputer that will be ready by 2026. Stargate will start processing AI data on this supercomputer.
This will allow us to see how the supercomputer will contribute to AI data processing in advance. Currently, we don’t know the exact specifications of the Stargate supercomputer. However, it’s revealed in the report that Microsoft will incorporate various AI chips, including Nvidia, for its AI data center.
As you know, AI companies and firms investing in this field have been upgrading their existing data centers for artificial intelligence. The increasing demand for processing more data by AI languages has led to the inclusion of higher-capacity processors and graphics cards in data centers.
Here’s Microsoft, along with OpenAI, building a data center with a budget that could rise to $100 billion to solve this problem. In fact, according to the report, this data center will incur expenses beyond the estimated $115 billion.
All expenses for this center will be covered by Microsoft’s treasury, according to details emerging. The data center, planned in five stages, is said to be in the third stage for OpenAI and Microsoft. Accordingly, the two giant companies are moving towards the stage of purchasing AI chips.
AI chips come with very high prices. The newly introduced Nvidia B200 AI chip is expected to cost between $30,000 and $40,000. In this sense, AI chips will be one of the biggest items for the artificial intelligence data center.
