The market share of electric vehicles in Europe decreased in 2024. According to data shared by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), the share of electric cars in the EU market decreased from 14.6 percent in 2023 to 13.6 percent in 2024.
The market share of electric vehicles in Europe is decreasing
Gasoline cars maintained their leadership with a market share of 33.3 percent in 2024. However, this rate decreased compared to the share of 35.3 percent in 2022. Diesel car sales, on the other hand, caused the market share to decrease to 11.9 percent with 1 million 267 thousand units. On the other hand, there was a significant increase in hybrid car sales. A total of 3.3 million hybrid vehicles were sold, an increase of 20.9 percent compared to 2023, and the total market share reached 30.9 percent.

The manufacturer that reached the highest sales figure by brand in the EU automobile market was Volkswagen with 1 million 371 thousand 465 vehicles. Toyota was second with 928 thousand 767 sales, while BMW was third with 774 thousand 925 vehicles. In the electric car segment, Tesla, Volkswagen and Renault stood out as the brands with the highest sales. Tesla’s total sales in the EU were 327 thousand 34.
The decline in electric car sales has led to discussions that the EU needs to strengthen its steps in terms of global competition. According to the ACEA report, unlike China and the US, the EU does not have a strong industrial strategy to support electric vehicle production.
Despite the incentives offered in Europe, deficiencies in charging infrastructure and the decrease in consumer interest in electric vehicles have been effective in preventing sales from reaching the desired level. China, on the other hand, maintains its strong position in global electric vehicle production and sales. The country’s superiority in the electric vehicle supply chain makes it difficult for Europe to increase its power in the electric car sector.
