The Ingenuity helicopter, carried by NASA’s Mars rover Perseverance, captured an image reminiscent of science fiction movies as it roamed the Martian surface. A spacecraft wreckage scattered among the red sands revealed one of the most interesting sights ever encountered on Mars. So who does the found vehicle wreck belong to? Details in our news…
NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter captures ‘extraterrestrial’ looking debris on Mars
At first, the images looked like they came from an alien planet and had an “extraterrestrial” feel, which excited scientists. However, a closer look revealed what it really was. According to NASA engineer Ian Clark, this debris is actually part of the landing equipment sent to Mars.
In fact, while the Ingenuity helicopter was originally planned to make only five flights, it actually made 72 flights, providing incredible details about the surface of Mars in the process. Ingenuity, which set out on a mission to explore areas that Perseverance could not reach, collected valuable information not only about the Martian surface, but also about the weather conditions and geological structure of Mars.
New images captured by the helicopter have once again revealed what a great engineering achievement has been achieved on the red planet. NASA officials say that such images are of great value for a clearer understanding of what the planet looks like on Mars.
In fact, the debris found on the planet’s surface is similar to the traces left not only on Mars but also in Earth’s orbit. More than 3,000 “dead” satellites and other expired space debris continue to orbit the Earth. In addition to about 2,000 active satellites, the “space junk” surrounding the Earth poses a serious threat to future space exploration and travel.
