Netflix announced that it will remove almost all of its interactive content from the platform as of December 1. Netflix, which first made a big difference in 2017 with content that allowed viewers to get involved in the story, has announced that the most prominent of these content, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend, which offered an interactive experience to its users. So what happened to these series?
Netflix says goodbye to interactive content as of December 1
First of all, in line with Netflix’s new decision, only four interactive content will remain on the platform. These include Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend, Ranveer vs. Wild with Bear Grylls and You vs. Wild.
Netflix’s first step into interactive content adventure is Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale, a format that allowed users to shape the story according to their preferences. However, company spokesperson Chrissy Kelleher stated that interactive content, while initially engaging, has not kept pace with Netflix’s innovative projects over time.
“This technology has served its purpose, but it’s time to focus on other technologies,” Kelleher said, explaining that Netflix has decided to move beyond interactive content. Interestingly, these changes come shortly after Netflix’s former head of gaming, Mike Verdu, announced that the company had stopped producing interactive content.
Netflix’s foray into the world of gaming has been notoriously difficult; for example, the platform shut down a AAA game studio last year without launching a game. In addition, despite the expansion of the game streaming service in the US, it still hasn’t reached a fully successful penetration.
Still, Netflix continues to build a large catalog of games, including mobile games and some content-based mini-games. All eyes are now on Netflix’s next steps on the gaming side; let’s see if the platform can achieve the success it wants in this area.
